The Viru Gates, which are the beginning to Old Town, where I stayed and explored in Tallinn. Think medieval era...and that's pretty much just it!

Had a great time in Tallinn, the capital city of Estonia. The weather was a bit of a schock as it was quite chilly compared to Berlin. And, I even saw snow! Hooray. But, it melted really quick! I was worried I wouldn't see it on my trip. But, Tallinn has a center called 'Old Town' - where pretty much it is an old, medieval town inside an urban center. Old Town was so cute and charming. And, in very good condition since it dates back to the 12th century. I loved it there.

The hostel I stayed at was more like a house...with beds in the living room. Was very homey and it was nice to meet people there. Israel, Brazil, Sweden, New Zealand - people from all over the world! Even met some locals - which apparently LOVE Canadians...so don't feel intimidated by Estonia.

Looks like a fairytale book...
Flying in on the plane. Over the Baltic Sea. Most sun I've seen in a long time. Sadly...it's dull, gray winter below those clouds!

It was actually quite modern there. Lots of shopping and a definite Western feel with some Baltic charm. The locals were super friendly and helpful with directions too. The city had an easy transit system (which is a bonus!) and even had skyscrapers...I didn't expect that in Estonia. I guess a lot has changed there since it became an independant country! And...man wireless internet is pretty much everywhere - apparently internet has been declared a basic human right. Too bad I don't have a laptop to enjoy it though!

Just a shot near an ancient monastery that's been there since the 12th century. I'm telling you this is an OLD place!

But, yes I enjoyed Tallinn - I had no idea what to expect and was pleasantly surprised by its cozy atmosphere, charming Old Town, and friendly locals.
