Whistlestop Johannesburg
From Trains and Boats then Planes in Johannesburg, South Africa on Dec 01 '06
We arrived in Johannesburg at 4pm having driven all the way from Kimberley. There was just time to spend an hour at the brilliant Apartheid Museum. It's a very well presented museum with interesting, incredibly informative exhibits and we really wished we had more time before it closed. I think you'd need about 3 hours to really get the most out of a visit.
Once they kicked us out from the musuem at closing time we were faced with the neccessity of finding somewhere to sleep. We thought we might as well head out to the place we'd stayed at before, which is near the airport. You'd think it would be easy to find, since all we had to do was follow signs to the airport. This did not prove to be easy, as there really weren't any signs for the airport. I mean there isn't even a sign for the airport off the M1, we went up and down the motorway as darkness approached. Cathal decided he was going to head to the outskirts of the city, thinking at least there'd be a sign there. As he turned, I spotted a tiny plane symbol on one of the slip roads about 6 lanes away and he crossed over, annoying several drivers along the way.
We got lost in the unbeliveably badly signposted city
We found signs after a while for Edenvale, which is where we were headed, and thinking we were out of the woods we kept going. However the signs disappeared and I was fairly sure we'd passed Edenvale. You'd think they'd put a Welcome to Edenvale sign or something. Anyway at that point we needed fuel so pulled over and having elicited help from random strangers, one of whom called the guesthouse for us. Because the turn off is very tricky, Bob (the owner) and his son stood out on the road with torches to guide us in, in manner of jet plane in distress! Adventures over, we ate and sank into bed.
The next day we got up super early in order to meet our friend Emma off her flight into Johannesburg. We hadn't seen her in almost a year and were very excited. Later that day we were all due to fly to Windhoek, Namibia to join a safari tour.
