250 years of dirt farming
From 3000 Miles Just to Learn... in Oruro, Bolivia on Oct 26 '06
oruro is about three hours south of la paz in the middle of buttfucknowhere, bolivia. basically, you roll through three hours of dirt until you come upon a small hill (also dirt) with a couple of buildings around it. oruro used to have a very profitable silver mine, which is kind of cool, but of course it doesnt anymore. what it does still dig up are sidewalks. there are none here. just big giant pits on the side of the road. but never let it be said that orurians (a word? a racial slur?) are not thorough, as literally every one is gone.
the only reason we ended up in this little town is because the train for the argentinian border leaves from here. it also goes past the poopó lakes. yes, i said it. poopó. to our surprise, there were an ungodly amount of people there. we didnt know why for the longest time because we have a policy of not making eye contact with poor people. we did eventually find out from an informative commercial and the slushy accent of our hostal proprietress that it was the 250 anniversary of oruro, and that the town is renowned throughout bolivia (a statement of ambiguous worth) for its carnaval...basically its a party town in the middle of nowhere thats better to go to than whatever crappy town you live because its bolivia. there was a party goin´on and school just got out for vacaciones and it was evo´s birthday. we were bummed we missed evo´s birthday in cochabamba, as he celebrated it with the cocaleros (coca growers). i bet that was one hell of a rager. probably went on alllllll night. ¡WHOO!
sometimes i have to use different words than i want to because i cant spell them. like "tremendously." TJ
and, i managed to lose my sweatshirt like the dumbass i am after we got away from the kickass black market in la paz, so i bought a new german looking track jumper made to look like a zero jacket by "rip cori" which im pretty sure isnt a surf company because bolivia has been landlocked since the war of the pacific (when chile kicked their ASS). imagine beating someone up and then taking their coast. fuckin a thats a beating.
tyler cant believe how long this is for a place we stayed less than 24 hours and mostly just watching atche be o in the hostel. he sucks.
peace holla
¡gritame!
