Drove to the coast via 30. A long and gorgeous drive.
Finally made it to Astoria, which is just about the most quintessential old west coast city I've seen in Oregon. It was one of those places that I really resonated with, perhaps because of the similarity in feel (somewhat) to Petoskey.
Continued across the bridge into Washington where my destination was Fort Canby for whale watching! Unfortunately, the "Whale Watching Spoken Here" folks recommended the Louis and Clark visitor center for watching, when the REAL whale sitings were happening at the lighthouse farther from the visitor center.

But once I found that lighthouse, I was rewarded with oodles upon oodles of whale spout sitings. Mission accomplished!
Bard's Hollow and the walk to the beach was pretty interesting and noisy. Bard's Hallow traverses a swampy area with lots of Skunk Cabbages and frogs and birds.
On the way back after a pink pinkey sunset, I even saw a garter snake.
Quite the day. The drive back (after a beer and dinner at the local pub) was long and tiring, but I felt good and weary when I went to bed.
