Fes
From Pete & Vic´s Big Trip in Fes, Morocco on Feb 03 '06
The bus journey to Fes was a very relaxed afair. We were told, rather optimistically it seems, that the journey would last a little over four hours. However, we made a number of stops at seemingly random destinations when the bus would empty completely (leaving only us on board). At one stop (40 minutes long) everyone seemed to be enjoying a lesiurely meal while watching the football. Then without warning, the bus filled with people once more and left. No one seemed particularly interested if everyone made it back on board!
Anyway, we finally arrived in Fes rather late in the evening and after a brief encounter with a gentleman who seemed rather interested in holding Vicky's hand outside the station, we decided it would be best to get a 'petit taxi' (little taxis which can't leave the city) to our hotel.
Who packed the compass?
The hotel was pretty impressive and had a huge internal courtyard with an attractive mosaic and fountain. However, to our delight it also had an electric heater so we were finally able to dry out our soggy clothes. We even washed a few things as a bit of a treat!
The next day we spent most of our time exploring the old medina. It's definitely the most interesting place we've been to so far and we quickly got lost in the maze of narrow streets (apparently over 9400). However, most of the stalls which lined the streets were actually selling things to the local population so once we got past the restaurants at the entrace we had very little hassle.  With the aid of our compass we even managed to make it out on our own!
