It was almost time to leave for Hawaii when we realised we needed a place to stay on the west side of the island.  So we decided to WWOOF it! (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms)  We connected with Una and Leon, who have farm just up the hill from Ellie's summer job--guiding kayaks. As soon as we got there, they put us to work.  We trade 25 hours each a week for food and "lodging," which includes a large tent on a platform and an RV on jacks.  We're still getting to know intricacies this jungle-farm.  Most of the five acres consist of coffee trees shaded by precarious, but bountiful avocado trees.  (While you guys pay 2 bucks for an avo, the ground here is covered in guacamole!)  The farm also sells macadamia nuts and bananas.  The rest, we eat; pineapples, cacao, salad vegetables, strangely-colored citrus, plums, you name it. Everything is organic, which means we work our butts off.  Seven hours of weeding can make anyone want to spray!  Also, Una and Leon have left much of the noninvasive plants live, and 100-year-old coffee trees follow no rows.  Wish you all could be here and see the beautiful farm!
