On the way back home to Edinburgh i "unfortunately" had to lay over in Quebec City for a night and day. I have always wanted to come visit the most historical city in North America, so i wasn't too upset you know.
My flight into Quebec City landed around 9pm so after a hearty meal i got off to bed, determined to see the sights in the full day i had the following morning. My flight wasn't until 5:30pm so i would have plenty of time.
My night clubbing days are well and truly over. Give me a castle anytime!

Rising early i gobbled down my breakfast and headed towards the Old Town. My hotel wasn't too far away but the 15min walk was brisk. I was eager to begin my tourist activities.
I must say that after wandering the streets and old walls for hours on end i was suitably impressed. The city is gorgeous and a real jewel in the North American crown. Chateau Frontenac is a landmark no doubt, its green spire visible from most locations in Old Town, particularly from the old walls. I didn't go in, but i did make a few passes along the promenade and main square. Sipping a coffee in the square and people watching took me back to my old travelling days - though back then the coffee would have been replaced with a cold beer.
I truly enjoyed Old Quebec and managed to wander its streets for hours on end. The day started misty, but by afternoon the blazing sun had me well and truly worn out. Highlights include the walls and gates, small quiet sidestreets and of course the domineering Chateau. The Old City is small and a real pleasure to wander aimlessly. If you hit an old looking wall or gate you have reached the old boundaries. Merely turn around, pick another direction and off you go again.
Before i organised my trip i was told Montreal would be a better layover city. I don't know about that! I haven't been to Montreal, but if it surpasses Quebec City then i would be very surprised. Possibly in the nightlife stakes, but in historical terms, not a chance. My night clubbing days are well and truly over. Give me a castle anytime!
Very impressed. I will return.
