What an amazing thing to see, the Colosseum is truly impressive.  Even in it's current state of deterioration it is easy to imagine all the history that has taken place on this site.  Our guide insisted that no Christians were ever killed here, only gladiators, roman slaves and wild animals.  The mazes of rooms below the floor of the Colosseum are exposed, and you can see the cramped quarters where the animals were kept and the gladiators prepared for battle.

Roman citizens did not work, because Rome was an empire all the wealth cam to the city.  The citizenry was kept fed and entertained by their rulers so they would not rebel.

The Colosseum - the greatest amphitheatre of the antiquity - was built in Rome, Italy, about 1920 years ago. It is considered an architectural and engineering wonder, and remains as a standing proof of both the grandeur and the cruelty of the Roman world.

After the splendour of imperial times, the Colosseum was abandoned, and in turn it became a fortress for the medieval clans of the city, a source of building materials, a picturesque scenery for painters, a place of Christian worship. Today it is a challenge for the archaeologists and a scenario for events and shows.
