Greetings from Madrid. The capital of Spain with 3.2 million people.  An easy city to walk around in. Centered around the historic city center, most walks are 30 minutes or less. Pedestrian zone walkways make it a very tourist friendly city. Lively and beautiful, particularly at night with everything lit up. A great metro and bus system makes it easy to get around town quickly as needed. If you don’t want to metro or bus it, it’s easy to find one of 15,000 taxi’s in Madrid !

Enjoyed a visit to the outrageous lavish Royal Palace, (Europe’s third greatest), and spending time in the 17th century historic district (built in 1619) of Plaza Major, the shopping district of Grand Via, Plaza de Espana and the Royal Botanical Gardens.  Most everything is built or identified by or around different Plaza’s.

THE JOYS OF TRAVEL

Discovered a fabulous Museum. Centro de Arte Reina Sofia. A very large former hospital that has been turned into a modern art museum. 4 floors are jam packed with one modern master painting after another.  This museum is most famous for Picasso’s painting Guernica, a monumental work, showing the horrors of modern war WW11.  Saw another Miro exhibit at the Thyssen-Bornemisza museum. Strolled by the Prado to Retiro Park. This 300 acre park is a beautiful and restful escape from the city without ever leaving. A beautiful lake, peaceful gardens, street entertainers, and great people watching. Finally a grand boulevard of statues leading you to the Prado.

Found yet another great Tex Mex restaurant in the Chueca neighborhood. Met up with our friends from London, (1 Italian and 1 Malaysian) for dinner before they returned back to London.

On a personal note, if you have gotten this far and read my blog and viewed my pictures, I hope you have enjoyed sharing this journey with us. For those of you that have made comments from the blog and or e mailed, that has made this trip even more memorable and I thank you.

Soon we leave Madrid for a return back to Dallas. It will be nice having fresh underwear, fresh socks, being able to fit in a shower without having to turn sideways, seeing English menus and sleeping in my own bed !  Ohy, the joys and memories of travel
