Las Terrazas
From Gap year travels in Cuba, Mexico, Guatemala and Belize in Las Terrazas, Cuba on Apr 11 '08
On Saturday we left Havana for Las Terrazas, a community made up of farming families who used to live scattered throughtout the area but now live in a beautiful eco reserve. They have access to schooling, healthcare, clean water and electricity in the village, none of which were easily available to them in their old homes. The area had been previously been deforested to make way for coffee plantations but has been carefully restored over the last thirty years. We visited an 18th century coffee plantation which has been maintained as it was then and learnt about the coffee making process before trying some served in the local way, black with honey which is delicious.
