We decided to spend the weekend in London with the kids before we set off.

Yesterday (Saturday) we went down to Greenwich to the Royal Observatory by boat from the Embankment (well you've got to do a boat trip), had a wander around Covent Garden and then went to see the Lion King show in the evening.

Greenwich is a great place. It has a great feel to it and the observatory is well worth visiting, if only to hear the story of how to measure longitude and how Harrison (who invented really reliable clocks) got stuffed by the Board of Longitude who had offered a prize of £20,000 (over £1m at today's prices) for such a clock.

My favourite bit though was to learn that although Greenwich is the centre of time and space by virtue of all time and distance being measured as a variation from 0 degrees longitude, Ordnance Survey use a different meridian for all their maps.

Even having persuaded the French and the Irish to join in, we then do our own thing.

Lion King

Lion King was a real spectacle. Well worth seeing for the costumes and the staging. But I bet the real thing is better.
