Relaxing in Railay

Last Tuesday we left Phuket in a mini-bus (fancy word for van) and headed for Krabi. Three hours and 1 squat toilet later, we arrived. However, Krabi was not our final destination, we still had to get to Railay Beach which is accessable only by boat. We found our way to the pier without much trouble and then waited for a long boat. The way the long boats work, is that they leave when they're full (8-10 people). We were the first two and were happy to relax for a while. An hour later, no one else had arrived and our boatman took off without any warning. We were getting quite impatient when we were joined by a guy from France. Plenty of new boatmen had offered their services and we were 1 person away from getting a boat to take us at an inflated price. By this point, we just wanted to get to the beach. Finally, after a 2 hour wait in the heat, we were off. We found our resort, which was actually beachfront, got some food and headed for the pool.

The rest of our days in Railay were pretty much the same; eating, lounging by the pool and not much of anything else. We both really enjoyed the area. It was quite small but we were happy to be in an area where we could walk around without being harassed. We found a fantastic restaurant, Mom's Kitchen, and ate there at least once a day. The food was delicious and cheap and we enjoyed the company of the world's smallest kitten.
One night in Railay, we decided to check out the nightlife. We started with a beer at Mom's Kitchen and worked our way down the beach. I'll admit it, it was my idea to get into the Mekong whiskey and Redbull but surprisingly, it was Darren who finished off my drink and then decided to order a bucket. At our last stop, we ran into a couple from Regina whom we had met earlier at our resort. We chatted with them for a while and then decided to call it a night before things got out of hand. As you might imagine, our next day was spent recovering.

We've sadly said goodbye to Thailand and have arrived in beautiful Langkawi. More on the marathon trip to get here in the next post.
