Another pretty town with churches
From Rich in the Americas! in San Cristobal Las Casas, Mexico on Feb 23 '06
13 hour bus journey, didn't sleep much, arrived at 8ish. Dumped my bags at the Magic Hostel (which is pretty good value at 50 peso for a dorm, the private rooms are pretty poor though. Decent little courtyard too) and went for breakfast with 3 guys from Manchester how were in the Mayflower in Escondido. Tried Tamales for the first time and they're pretty good. Walked around town, went to the market and had a look at a few tours. San Cristobal is a nice little town with some nice churches. In fact, it's pretty much the same as any of the other towns I've seen so far.
Got some flyers for 3 for 1 beers and free cocktails for some clubs so thats where we went. The free cocktail was pretty bad and not particularly alcoholic. The clucb was pretty empty and not that great and the 3 for 1 beers cost 60 peso (which is the cost of 3 beers). So we left without buying a drink. Went to another place, which followed a very similar theme (bad free cocktail and expensive drinks). San Cristobal doesn't seem the place to party, even on Friday night.
The hostel owner has a puppy called Maya. Maya chews everything in site and bites your ankles. Maya is quite cute though but gets a kick every now and again. Everyone moved things out of reach of the dog.
Went to San Juan Chamula on Saturday. It's a small, very religous village about 20 mins bus ride from San Cristobal. They have a Carnaval most days where the locals run around the square and the church in traditional dress and let lots and lots of fireworks off. It's interesting but you're not allowed to take photo's. Apparently Sunday is the best day to go. Seeing as I'm bored of taking photo's of Church's I don't have any of San Juan or San Cristobal.
Went out again on saturday night, even though I was feeling ill, hoping it was better than Friday. The hostel was pretty full and quite a few people came out, which made the night much better. I was feeling ill and left the club at 1. Got woken up a couple of hours later when 1 of the Manc guys comes back from the club very drunk and tries to wake everyone in the dorm up. Nice! The manc guys had a bus to catch at 7am so they're going feel knackered the next day.
Took a bus to Palenque at 12.15. Spent the 5 hour journey plugged into my iPod as I was feeling really rough.
