We landed in Cartegena, Spain and decided to tour on our own with John and Liz (our tablemates from the last and this cruise - from Australia).  The town has historic significance from Roman times through today.  Forts are cover the surrounding hills with even evidence of WWII.  There is a Roman Theater from 400 BC which was just discovered in 1989.  We walked the streets and even though it was Sunday some stores were opened as it is Christmas season and there were 3 big ships in port with over 6000 people!  John and I did get us lost even though we were navigating with two maps but it was great fun.  Locals were out in force all dressed up (even the kids were all dressed up).  The small streets are fascinating and there is a main walking street from the port to the main part of town as was the case in Barcelona.  We had some delicious gelati (Italian ice cream) and I got a chance to use my broken Spanish when Liz was trying to buy some jewelry.  The weather was in the 70's with a gorgeous blue sky and we had another wonderful day.

You're now close to the area where I rented the house - just West. Vejer de la Frontera if you want to check your map. Isn't that a lovely area in Spain? Andalucia is what I consider the "old Spain" whereas Barcelona is the most modern and cosmopolitan city. It makes me ache to be there. Let's rent a place and go back!! Love Kathy
