We arrived in Vianden Luxembourg after a long drive from Haarlem and some narrow windy roads. It´s a picturesqe little town in a valley with cobbled streets, a river running through town and a castle overlooking the main street. We had decided to treat ourselves to a night in a hotel and checked into a little boutique hotel on the main street with a free buffet breakfast, our own bathroom and a huge king size bed. As we had driven into town we saw a chairlift to the castle so we ventured to the bottom and caught the steepest chairlift I´ve EVER been on up the mountain. We discovered however, that it led to no where and we then spent about 15 minutes slipping down the hillside (me in thongs) through the forest. We eventually arrived and since it cost 6 euros each for entry and was similar to the Marksburg castle we decided against it. We sensibly decided to take the longer way back to the chair lift via the road however it didn´t take us long to discover that the road didn´t lead to where we wanted. We spent over an hour completely lost and climbing very steeply uphill. Eventually we thought we could see the chairlift below and scrambled down the mountain and with a huge sigh of relief hopped back on the chairs and descended. We returned to the hotel and had 2 very long and very hot showers. Shared a snitzel and vegetable soup for dinner and sank back gratefully onto our king sized bed to sleep!
