Tela - Drunks and Dirty Hotels
From The Americas Tour in Tela, Honduras on May 13 '07
We left Copan and had a couple of 2nd class buses to take us to Tela. They weren't too bad by local standards - everyone got a seat and there wasn't any pushing but no air conditioning for 6 hours is tough.
Arrived in Tela, an old banana plantation town which has more of a Garifuna culture which is kind of caribbean. We tried to find the best hotel in the town to have lunch by the beach and when we eventually got there it was desserted and there was no-one in the restaurant apart from us.
I thought about going in the sea but there seemed to be alot of dead jellyfish on the shore so I thought it was best not to risk it. We had a good seafood dinner and the girls tried out the conch soup - the local speciality. The town was deserted after dinner so we had an early night.
Not much sleep as it seemed the local drunks hung out at the corner opposite our hotel and they were on the go until about 5am when we got up to take our school bus out of the town when we found them passed out in a doorway. I considered shouting to wake them up as payback but decided it might not be wise! It was easily our worst hotel so far and wasn't too clean.... although not as bad as Tom's room which had a load of hair in the bed, the sink and the toilet.... although that turned out to be a practical joke by the girls!
