Stand until you drop
From Euro Trip 2007 in Paris, France on Jun 08 '07
i knew today was going to be painful.......here is how it went: woke up early, had the usual breakfast and then met wajnaa at the metro station.....of course i was still tired and restless from yesterday but it was my last day in Paris.....first stop was the Pantheon.....we even got there before it opened!! it is a huge building in the Latin Quarter of Paris where they have statues and paintings of some of France's famous but recently dead people (did that make sense?)...i.e. victor Hugo and the likes.....after a small peak inside we decided not to waste the time or money on that stuff.....it didn't look attractive......but the building looks very nice (huge roman columns at the entrance of the building)......The Latin Quarter is where all the student life is in Paris, so we walked around the University of Paris Campus......it is a bunch of old buildings scattered around.......after that, we visited the St.Jermaine Depre Cathedral.....although it wasn't on the list of things to see in Paris, but it was worth it........we passed by another Cathedral (St Something)....but it was not nice........
after some walking around we reached the Musée du Luxembourg.... they host temporary exhibitions according to a programme decided by the Ministry of Culture and the Senate....it was about jewelery so Nahhhhhhh, we didn't go in....however, the museum/palace has a very nice garden with a nice fountain....we walked around and as soon as we sat around the fountain, wajnaa and i fell asleep instantly......i dont remember how it happened but we were so tired and and with minimal sleep...we both crashed on the chairs......(the weather was beautiful by the way....it was cloudy all week but it was finally starting to shine)........
It should be illegal to be on your feet for that long
nearly an hour later, we started walking toward Ste. Chapelle....a church opposite the Notre Dam that was built in the mid 13th century to house the precious relics (i.e. Christ's crown of thrones...etc)...it is a Gothic Church....its highlight is 12 huge stained glass windows that tell the story of different books of the bible (Genesis, Exodus, Kings....etc).......attached to the church is the Palais de Justice (but you cant get inside it).......between the two building is the Conciergerie.....that became a prison at one point where hundreds of people spent their last minutes there before their execution during the French Revolution....the most prominent prisoner was Marie Antoinette (Queen of France)......we saw her cell........that whole experience is not that great but it was okay
after that, we speed walked our way to the Musee d'Orsay ... it houses the old rail station but now it has more french art.......there was a line up, and a fixed entrance time...plus, we were running short on time and i wanted to see Les Invalides.......now that was worth the visit although we didn't have enough time to see the whole place....it was 6 already........the place was built as a hostel for all the french soldiers who were injured in battle and couldn't fight or work anymore....plus it was built for more reasons than that of course, and that is clear through its fancy and huge and extravagant architecture......it is very pretty from the inside as well....it is also a museum of arms: guns, swords, canons, suits of armors...etc....in addition, it has a chapel and some nice paintings and statues......the biggest crowd attractor is Napoleons tomb (his remains that is......he was exiled and died on an island, remember?)...he was excavated few years later as per his wish to be buried between his people (so sad QQ).......i wish we had more time and energy.
anyway, wajnaa went home but how could i go home without going up the Eiffel Tower....it was Saturday evening in one of the world's busiest cities........i waited nearly 2 hours to go all the way to the top.........the view was breathtaking.......it really is pretty cool.......so high and surrounded by buildings and greenery from every direction........i recommend going up it for all....by the way, it also takes time to go down.......i was tired, sleepy, hungry, frustrated and impatient.....but it was worth it, but i was tired, sleepy, hungry, frustrated, and impatient...but it was worth it, but i was..........you get tension, right?
i walked a bit more around before i said my goodbye...there were some live music and shows......i traveled back to my area....stopped by an internet cafe to up load my pictures........that took forever (so many problems)....anyway, it was almost 11 and i still haven't ate, rested or showered and i had to pack for tomorrow........but i did that all after franticly....and i slept like a log.....
Au Revoir Parie :)
