Huaraz is the main town in the Cordillera Blanca, an area of jewelled lakes and snowy mountains, attracting thousands of mountaineers and hikers.
Huaraz was almost completely destroyed in the 1970 earthquake. When we were there they were rebuilding the Plaza de Armas (main square) as well as the cathedral. Not a pretty place at all, but its setting is spectacular as you can see the many snow-capped mountains from the town.
We were on a stop-over before heading further north, so we relaxed and enjoyed the many good views.
