Lord of the Rings
From New Zealand in Wanaka, New Zealand on Nov 09 '06
The drive to Wanaka was a very wet one , but even this looked good through the rain. I would love to see Haast's Pass on a clear day. We stopped off on route to look at some of the waterfalls.
Wanaka has to be one of our favourite places. It is a small town set on a lake edge with mountains surrounding it. We relaxed in the morning , having a coffee on the lake side and soaking up the views.
In the afternoon we drove along to Mount Aspiring National Park , which had the most beautiful views that I had seen so far and in fact for the whole trip, it is the place that I was most amazed by. Needless to say much of the scerenry was shot in Lord of the Rings films. We went on a great walk called the Rob Roy track , where we wandered along a river up to a glacier, we were lucky enough to see some avalanches on the way that sound like thunder. And we met a few cheeky keas that tried to take our lunch !
