I'm now in Leon, Guanajuato. The local economy seems to be based on leather - primarily cowboy boots, but also purses, wallets and tight pants that the local artisans have fashioned for their women.
In fact, the city calls itself the shoe capital of the world due to the large number of factories that pollute the air here. This is an industrial town, no doubt about it. But the downtown area is different from the rest of the city and the Plaza de los Fundadores is really quite beautiful. There was a terrible flood here in 1883 and the Plaza, with it cathedral and government palace are about all of colonial Leon that survived. As far as the shoes go, the area immediately around the bus station is as far as one needs to go.
