On route to Stanley we stopped in Bernie to do some shopping and then stopped at a spectacular coastal lookout at Table Cape and walked out to the lighthouse. Our destination was Stanley, a pretty little town on the northern coast of Tassie.

Stanley’s headland is called The Nut which is a large rock that rises above and shelters colourful timber cottages and shops in the town. We became rather nutty ourselves and blamed it on The Nut, which we climbed (albeit chair-lift assisted).

It was very windy and after the first night we moved to a spot with more shelter. This proved to be a good idea as the wind just got worse and tent pegs and poles can only provide so much protection.

We did a side trip to Arthur River and did a boat cruise. This is a pristine wilderness accessible only by boat. We saw Sea Eagles nesting and got a fright from a tiger snake when we stopped for a short walk and lunch.

The girls enjoyed exploring a restored historic colonial building called Highfield. This is where the chief agent for the Van Diemen’s Land Company and his family lived in the 1830s.
