Completed the Overland Track, known as Australia's best bush walk.  Walked approximately 98 kilometers (60 miles), over 6 days, through amazing wilderness, carrying an 18 kilogram (40 pound) pack.  Hard to describe, but I felt I had achieved something when I finished.

High/low lights included:

Scaling Barn Bluff, despite taking the wrong path.  (It was steep and dangerous, and unlike the nine year old girl in my party, I was quite scared.)

Successfully pitching a tent in root-ridden terrain, and flicking off multiple leeches on my hands and arms before they got to my blood. ALMOST getting to the top of Mt Ossa (Tasmania's highest peak), before having to turn back due to cloud cover.

Making record time while getting absolutely drenched, walking solo to Pelion Hut.  The gear in my double lined pack stayed dry.  The camera in my unlined pants got rurnt'.

Taking a dip in the chilly "pools" at Kia Ora Hut.

Chuckling over a Dutch couple that wore jeans, ate food from cans, and carried some sort of axe/hammer that was tied loosely to the back of their packs.  (Even a complete novice like me knows that doing these things is dumb, impractical and dangerous.) Enjoying "real" food at the end of the trek -- hamburger with the lot, chips, chocolate and beer -- and a shower.

Look. Leave those dutch alone! It's bad enough they have to wear wooden shoes. They don't need you making fun of their ice-axes and canned goods. (And whats wrong with jeans? They take forever to dry? Too much chafing? They are the quintessential symbol of North-American imperialism?) I am now, officially, intensely jealous. Seething almost. Wish I could be there with you. Man I miss nature. Enjoy it man. You look good with a beard by the way. You look like Dad in the late seventies. But you look good. Sorry about your camera... but sounds like a small price to pay. (Not in dollars... in dollars it will probably be a large price but otherwise small). Live it up man... but try to take it easy on those Dutch tourists. Even if they do wear dark socks with white sneakers. They can't help it. All the best brother, Drew

Looks like an awesome trip so far, I have to say I'm ridiculously jealous. Next journal entry give some feedback on the details of Australia. Is the food any good? Are the people friendly? Besides the landscape, is it that much different from the States? ps- When did you become a foreigner and use the term 'hire a car'? pps- Give Mr. Hackenburg his beard back.

I am a Tasmanian local and I am in awe of what you have seen!! You have spent more time exploring my state than I have ever considered spending, at the first sight of a chance to holiday I am usually on a plane out of Tassie. Thanks for inspiring me to take some time to explore my own backyard. Your blog is a great read

Sorry about leading you the hard way up Barn Bluff Rob, but you survived the challenge! From my post-walk research, I think the Flying Dutchmen ("If the book says 5 hrs, we take 10") had a geologists hammer (along with the Levi's & tin mine). Perhaps those bulging packs contained rock samples too! All the best!

I can't wait to here how you, sam and pippen do on your trip to farthumdur. Beware of Gollum and the war to take over the middle earth. Not shaving is a good disguise, maybe you will keep lord voldemort (wait that is a different trip) maybe you will keep the flys away. You know those little beard brushes really turn on the ladies, lol. Thanks for the email rob, good luck and keep taking pictures. Hopefully, you can borrow one of those dutch folks polaroid instant camera.
