A series of temples and shrines are embedded into the side of Ontake-san mountain. The 'hike' consists of lots and lots of stairs. The shrines on this mountain celebrate the god of hips and legs. So if you have a bad hip or problem legs, a visit may be worth it... if you believe in superstition. The lodge that we stayed at provide a few nice craft activities, such as indigo tie-dye, glass beads and soba-making, all for a reasonable price. A good weekend trip from Tokyo.
