4WD Safari on Frasier Island
From 4WD Safari on Frasier Island in Brisbane, Australia on Sep 14 '01
After a hellish 10 hour bus ride from Arlie Beach I arive in Hervey Bay. Where Biran and I immediatly headed out on a self guided 4WD tour of Frasier Island. Us and seven other strangers packed ourselves and our supplies into a beast of SUV and off we went.
Frasier Island island is all sand, no soil, no clay and only two or three small rock outcrops. It's one gigantic, 120km by 15km foliated sand bar - the worlds largest. It has amazing sand blows (large drifting dunes), forstery and about 200 lakes some with supberb swimming.
There was some nice scenery indeed. This was also hard core camping. No Facilities but a roll of toilet paper and a shovel. Every night we would be visited by wild dingos and every day we would risk our lives tearing around the beach in our 4x4. All in all a very fun time. Though I've never been so dirty in my life.
The island has two different types of lakes, Blue ones and Green ones. Below you see an example of both the blue is McKenzie lake and the green one is Basin lake. They are fresh water lakes so clean that the water is piped directly to campsites with out filtration. There are also a few ship wreck around the island, here is one that I actually got to climb on.
