As we still had a day to kill before heading back to Kampala and having a weekend on the lash we decided to see the sights of Entebbe, which consist of the Wildlife Education Centre and the Botanical Gardens. We stayed at a great backpackers hostel owned by Frank who has some interesting opinions on how all races should breed together to produce better offspring taking the concept of "free love" to another level!

The Botanical Gardens although not a serious rival to Kew were worth a visit if only for the Spider Walk as Beds cringed and contorted herself along the 50-metre pathway.

Whilst we were in the Botanical Gardens we met a boy who was very thin and clearly ill with several lesions on his body. Although we were not certain it was a timely reminder of Africa’s HIV/AIDS epidemic that is wiping out a generation and it is easy to forget as you see people go about their daily lives in villages, towns and cities throughout Africa.

After leaving the Botanical Gardens we headed for the Wildlife Education Centre, which is in a bit of sorry state. In some of the enclosure placards replace the actual animal mourning their passing but we were not sure of the crocodile and lion had really departed or just been “misplaced”. We did get to see more chimps in an impressive enclosure that is ringed by water rather than a fence to keep them in and we also saw the only two white rhino left in Uganda. However, clearly for some local children the only two white humans left in the education centre were more interesting than the rhino even when the rhino relieved itself – which is normally a cue for peals of laughter from kids.

After a sumptuous all you can eat buffet at the Lake Victoria Windsor Hotel we checked our bed for any sign of “free love Frank” and go some rest before heading back to Kampala.
