Margaret River
From Round The World Trip 2006-2007 in Margaret River, Australia on Nov 26 '06
We had a bit of craic in the van as Matt drove us all the 300 or so kilometres south to Margaret River; one of the seven best wine producers in the world and a place which came highly recommended to me by my Aunty & Uncle. It turns out the schoolies have taken over the place, til the weekend (great!), so all the hostels around the town were fully booked out til then. We got the last room in Surfpoint around 7.30pm so we were all a bit relieved to have a room for the night - otherwise the van it would have been :o) After dinner we were knackered, the weekend sheninagans catching up, and we all passed out quickly. As we were checking out, the next morning, the owners started clearing the fridges. We could take whatever we wanted - sweet! We got soo much goon and all kinds of food (mostly unopened). What a waste of food they threw out but it worked in our favour - we didn't need to buy any drink for two days hehe.
After that, we went to the Visitors Center which booked us some new accommodation. It turned out perfectly. We got a very nice, comfy cottage on a farm (yes, it has real animals walking about). We could come & go as we pleased, cooking our own dinner (always tasty) and having a laugh.
Margaret River - great wine, cheese & chocolate in beautiful surroundings..
While in Margaret River you have to visit the wineries. I read about a tour called 'Wine for dudes' which was recommended and I would do likewise. We had a great time visiting 4 wineries (Juniper, Hay Shed Hill, Flying Fish Cove and Howard Park/Mad Fish), and a Cheese & Chocolate factory - all delicious :o) We arrived home all pretty tipsy with a few bottles that took our fancy. It was a really enjoyable day.
Unfortunately it rained alot while we were here, which ruined the famous spectaculor sunsets. Ah well. It didn't stop us buying a fishing rod though and giving that a go (the three of us haven't fished since we were teenagers). We're mad! Pissing ourselves laughing trying to fish in the lashing rain. Needless to say we caught nothing :o)
We headed back to Perth as Super Danish are flying to South Africa Friday morning. We had a great time in Margaret River. It's a beautiful place.
