Hammocks are so great!
From So wrong, but somehow so right! in Vientiane, Laos on Oct 17 '06
We arrived at Vientiane in Kayaks after capsizing in the rapids on the way down..
Vientiane is the capital of Laos and so although the last thing any of us felt like was being in a city we took a tuk tuk ride to the Stepa - An impressive big Wat, we visited the National Museum and learn't about the harsh struggles of Laotian people and we walked up the French influenced Arc de Triumphe landmark.
After one day and two nights we took a night bus to Pakse in the South a 12 hour trip that took 14 hours after we had a blow out on the tyre and for an hour and a half we watch as three lao guys struggled to change the trye. From Pakse we went to the 4,000 Islands.
The first Island was Don Khong - a sleepy and idealistic place where most of the locals spent their time working the rice fields. We had met up with an American couple Chris and Lana, an American guy called Brad and a Finnish girl called Auri. The 7 of us (including Floyd) hired bikes on the Island, played bowls and poker in the night.
After two days we took a long tailed boat to Don Det a smaller and more touristy Island where we lay in hammocks and watched sunsets...and celebrated Floyds birthday with a BBQ and caught up with our Scottish friend Dave (who turned up one our last day!)
