After being told we had to let down our football at the Ecuadorian security check, they suspected Pete was hoarding cocaine inside, we jumped on the plane and said goodbye to South America. It was a shame we never got to Venezuela, but I was looking forward to Mexico.

Cancun probably wasn’t the wisest choice to obtain some Mexican culture. The Fourth of July celebrations were in full swing and the town was swamped with partying Americans. The heat and humidity were unbearable and after finding a hostel to stay at we took off to the nearest pub with two Scotsmen. We discovered a bar that had huge lettering in English saying 2 for 1 drinks. A beer was worth 20P (about $3) so we well and truly got stuck into it. At the end of the night however, we hit some trouble. As our bill was brought to us I was horrified to see the amount was a lot larger than it should have been. I quietly informed the manager that she had made a mistake, but she replied by saying that 2 for 1 meant one beer cost 15P, so two cost 30P! For the life of me I couldn’t make her see that her signage didn’t mention such nonsense. Whoever heard of a 2 for 1 deal where all it meant was the drinks were slightly cheaper? Being highly informed on the true meaning on what a 2 for 1 deal should be, we were not happy. A yelling match began, where the woman got her boys to try and sort us out. I didn’t particularly want to fight, so after giving her the finger and a mighty scream of “Ladron!” we ran off. We made sure we avoided that area for the rest of our stay. Suffice to say, we made damn sure all future 2 for 1 deals were explained before our drinking sessions began.

Since we were officially in the Caribbean, I just had to go swimming. The fact that the heat was really getting to me helped make the decision as well. The beach was beautiful and the water lovely and warm. There were Americans everywhere, but this meant the place had a good, party atmosphere. The only problem being, was that everything was a complete rip off. The prices meant we couldn’t stay for long and since I hadn’t come to Mexico to party with 18 year old Americans anyway, the decision to leave wasn’t hard.
