Never try to say this word in Spanish
From Never try to say this word in Spanish in Quito, Ecuador on Aug 20 '05
I finally did it. I tried to say a word in Spanish and I had no idea how to so I guessed. And it was a word I shouldnt have said. Merivelle, Anna and I were cooking dinner. I was trying to explain how the food on airplanes is bad. How is has a lot of PRESERVATIVES. Whoops! Both of them looked at me when I finished my sentence and said you dont want to say that word. I had no idea what they were talking about. It turns out that it sounded like...the male body part. We all got a good laugh out of it.
I went to the grocery store by myself to do some major shopping for Anna. It was a good experience. Besides trying to find everything I had to ask someone where something was, I talked to the guy at the checkout, I talked to the bag guy and I talked to the taxi driver. It was a learning experience. Everyone has a different accent and speaks at different rates. It was really good practice. And somehow I got all the correct items at the grocery store. Did you know they have one side of an isle with different types of rice. How many types of rice can there possible be? A lot!

There was a tremor from one of the volcanoes the other day. I never even noticed. Traffic here is bad. So is the pollution. The guys riding motorcycles wear masks (like the ones doctors or nurses would wear) while they ride. You are not allowed to drive your car to work everyday. You are limited by the last digit on your license plate. I think its once a week or once a month. I dont remember now.
There are security guys everywhere for everything. Some have guns. Its perfectly normal here. In the neighborhoods there are little wood houses that only fit one person. You see them every four blocks or so. There is a security guy for the neighborhood inside. I took a picture so I will show you.
Last night I cooked an American dinner for Anns family, Merivelles family and the two Italians who were back from the Amazon. I bought cheese & crackers with wine for an apetizer, turkey, potatoes & carrots for dinner and apple pie for desert. I wasnt sure if they would like it but there was nothing left over so I guess they did. They all taked about how it was our traditional meal at Thanksgiving and seemed really excited to try it. My Mom will be proud!
I have a return date of Saturday October 1st. So to all my triathlete friends I want to go to the Key Sunday. Let me know what time and what we are doing and I will be there. Breakfast is a must afterwards!
See you soon!
Christine
