Tired
From Tired in Heraklion, Greece on Oct 28 '01
'It's a great day to be alive.'
Finally made it to Crete. Too tired to write much. Our ferry's departure was delayed until 3:30am. Slept on the deck for a couple of hours and stumbled around town for an hour before our huge group could find the hostel. It's a complete dump - 6 bunk beds in my room (that's ok)all full, squat toilets (not uncommon here), filthy mattresses, no sheets, blankets, or pillows, crappy shower, no hot water, and a real witch working there. It's also pretty expensive. Oh well, no big deal it's only for a night.
Tomorrow we head out of town EARLY.

All right, I'm writing this several days later, since I haven't been near a computer.
Actually the hostel turned out ok. The room was full of 12 people, and we all stayed up talking for a long time. Met some pretty cool guys. The most interesting by far was Frank (although I don't believe this was his real name). Frank is a 28 year old guy from Nigeria (I can't remember the name of his tribe, but he was very proud of it). He has lived in 18 countries so far and is currently selling pirated cd's on the streets in Crete. He apparently has a college degree and want's to go to Canada and get his masters. He speaks nine languages, 5 of which are different African tribal languages. He was pretty nice, but talked for 2 hours straight about problems with the Nigerian government, lack of foreign investment capital, corruption, and British and Portuguese colonialism. Pretty interesting, but it tended to be somewhat long winded as well.
Also met a cool guy from the states. He just gave up a career as a professional tennis player and now is traveling for a couple of years. I am going to try to hook up with him in Vietnam. Met quite a few other interesting individuals also, but don't want to bore you.
The next morning we got up early and took a bus to see the famous Minoan ruins at Knossos, supposed to be the best of all of them. It was cool, but I couldn't get into it too much. Also went to see the Archaeological Museam of Crete, supposed to be the 2nd best museum in Greece. My guide book said it would take several days to see the whole thing. We saw it in its entirety in 30 minutes. Really, how many rooms full of beads and broken pots can you look at, especially dodging hundreds of blue haired old German women in tour groups?
