Another Sunny Day

On Friday, we were back on the big island. This time it's Kona, a nice little tourist joint on the West coast. Kona doesn’t have a dock big enough for the cruise ship, so we dropped anchor just off shore and arrived on land by way of the tender boats. From there we headed South along the coast stopping occasionally to check out various mini-beaches (very small pockets of sand that could maybe accommodate 5 people, very interesting…) and scenery. The streets were bustling with cars and pedestrians who darted in and out of all the shops that lined our path (mostly drawn to the selection of wind chimes and ukeleles, of course). Further down, before the shops gave way to hotels, was an outside market where merchants sold everything from fruit and drinks to shells and beads. I was amused by some of the little hand made percussive toys. I almost bought this little shaker and a croaker (a stick you twist that is attached to a resonant object and produces a frog croaking sound - I’m sure you wanted to know that), but I didn't feel like carrying it around all day. So, instead, I bought a hat.

Before heading back to the ship, Steve and I stopped to get something to eat. I was in the mood for some seafood and the place we decided upon was going to serve up the catch of the day for me and my compadre. I can't quite remember the name of the restaurant, but it was something like Katherine's. Anyway, the catch ended up being Mahi Mahi which was good, I thought, but the seasoning was horrible. I couldn't eat much of it which was probably a good thing since Steve wasn't feeling too hot later on the day. So if you dine at a place called something like Katherine's in Kona tell them to lighten up on the seasoning!

That evening we put on another good show. This time it was 50's night which dramatically increased the median age of the crowd. The ship began it's journey to Kaui early into our set (probably due to the distance needed to travel to reach our destination by sun up) and again I experienced the slight rocking motion while playing the drums. The ship's motion (though slight) made even walking much more fun. It was like having a constant beer buzz.
After the show, I wanted to get to bed quickly because I promised myself that tomorrow morning would be the one sun rise that I would witness. And this would also allow me to watch the ship pull into dock at Kaui. I was going to be very pissed off at myself if I couldn't get my ass out of bed just once this week to see the sun shoot out over the ocean!
