Home day, kids did journals. Naomi went to return the GPS but was given a lesson in how to use it. The man kept telling me that I had to “avoir confiance avec la machine” Have confidence in the machine. I showed him the way it tried to take us to Caen and we had a one and a half hour conversation about the fact that I could choose to get where I wanted to go via the fastest route or the shortest route. I told him that I wanted to go on the most sensible route. Not the fastest so that all I see are the motorways, and not the shortest so that it takes me on every goat-track short cut between towns. What I wanted was the most sensible way. No, he said, only the shortest or the fastest. He knew what I meant but said I would certainly enjoy my journeys with the GPS. He told me I needed to get rid of my map and trust the machine. I think he thought I needed therapy and finally he said that if I still didn’t like my GPS when I finished my trip in five months, that they would take it back as a return. Having had the GPS for several weeks now, we have to say it has been wonderful despite the odd detours. And if we don’t like the look of a goat-track then we just don’t take it.

We went over to Gordon and Susie’s place for dinner in Domfront. They have some great stories about who they got to meet when Susie worked for the Seychelles Embassy in London. It was very interesting to talk about the challenges of living in France. It would be great to do that for a couple of years. Lovely home, great dinner, fantastic wine – 5 Euro bottle is excellent. The kids watched Jumanji with Chrissy.
