A French-Indochinese Town
From Deepening the Groove Between Bangkok and Hanoi in Luang Prabang, Laos on Oct 25 '08
The night markets of Luang Prabang and Kao San Road Bangkok. Differences between markets don't get further appart than those two exampled. Uniform, quiet, pretty vs. noise and clutter. Both have their attractions, but the red-tented, silent markets of Luang Prabang I was not expecting. Nor the expanse or variety of stalls. In these markets, the number one rule is if you don't bother the Laotian, the Laotian won't bother you. The Laotian won't be offended if you change your mind and the Laotian won't chase after you. But they will rip you off left right and centre if you don't watch it. Crafty little people.
The former capital of Laos today is a world herritage town. Lots of things can be done inside the town itself and any hour of the day. Starting at sunrise, when the monks prowl the streets, collecting alms. A neverending, orange catepillar. Breakfast at a restaurant along side the tall banks and ginormous trees by Mekong. Stroll around town apprectiating the French architecture, checking out a few temples or visit the national gallery which has the Royal family's history. Climb the hill for a 360 degree view of the city after lunch or to watch the sunset. Dinner at the oldest family owned restaurant in Laos (of which the name I forget), and some browsing at the markets. Finally, a ride in a spacious tuk-tuk back to the hotel.
The red-tented, silent markets of Luang Prabang I was not expecting.
Formula for a good day of activities.
Ouside the city it takes about 20 minutes to drive to the Kuang Sii waterfalls. They're very relaxing and accessible. Its best to follow the advice of a sign next to the crashings of water, "Do Not Swimming Area", but further down the river you can swim.
