Does anything eat Wasps?
From Overland to Malaysia in Riga, Latvia on Aug 11 '08
If you didn't get this popular stocking filler from a few years ago,
then I can now reveal the answer, it is me. However I wouldn't
the answer is me, but I wouldn't recommend it!
recommend it, especially if like me you have developed a severe
reaction to bee stings brought on by prolonged exposure to Clare's
bees. The wasp had snuck unseen into a chicken sandwich I was eating
in a very nice little park in the centre of Riga and as I ate it it
stung the roof of my mouth. Those of you who teach key stage three
science will of course know that bees have an acidic sting and wasps an
alkaline sting (or else the other way around, I can never remember and
besides it'll be at least another year before I'm expected to enthrall
a class of 12 year olds with that fact!) but the pH of insect stings
doesn't seem to make much difference to my body which made my mouth and
throat start to swell.
Clare then bundled me into a taxi and took
me off to the local hospital where she perfected her mime of someone
being stung by a wasp and then swelling up and I was injected with a
number of unknown drugs which did the business
and sorted out the swelling.
After
an afternoon under observation in A&E I was allowed to go home
and in an inspired move it was decided that our hotel
specializing in stag parties was not the best place to convalesce and
so we checked into the Grand Palace Hotel. Things started to look a
lot better as soon as the black BMW they sent to collect us pulled up,
and once we were settled into the leather interior I started to relax!
Now
the next day I'm feeling a lot better, no swelling to report and
although I'm shattered I have managed to walk across the room to the
intenet terminal in my complementary robe and slippers.
So if you
have the book on the shelf you now need to make a small note in the
margin to add Aaron to the list of things that eat wasps!
