Just Arriving... Bienvenue
From First time in Europe in Paris, France on Aug 18 '07
My friend and I arrived in Paris very early that day. After just leaving the baggage at the hotel, we freshened our face and headed out to see Paris. The neighborhood we would stay in was very far from the Paris I had on my mind, it was a neighborhood of african immigrants, small shops and lots of people walking aimlessly in the streets. After getting a metro station guide we headed out to the Marché de Puce de Montreuil which was supposed to be one of the biggest flea markets in Paris. I must say you need to be very patient to get good bargains, but if you have enough shopping spirit you might actually encounter some amazing treasures. I bought some armenian fabrics, a vintage Burberry trenchcoat and some amazing pieces of antique jewelry and photographs for my collection.
After that we went to downtown Paris. Still shopping european fashion had always fscinated me, but I was more amazed about what parisian women were wearing on the street of what I could find in the big stores. Their sense of style and the elegance they exuded was beautiful to watch. In some store I lost my friend, so I decided we would meeti back in the hotel and I wandered the streets on my own, which was a wonderful experience. I bought some bread and a hot cocoa and sat watching the Sena river and admiring the wotk of some street artists that was really amazing.
I walked on many streets, I got lost and then found. I discovered a park, a library, an old woman´s home turned into bar and enjoyed the best onion soup of my life.
I visited Notre Dame, had a ride in boat through the river, and climbed up to the Eifeel tower to take some photographs. I visited the Louvre which I absolutely loved, and I also visited Museé D´Orsay which for any impressionist lover is like paradise.
Montmartre was one of my favorite things about Paris. The bohemian air of cafes, bars, galleries and the narrow beautiful street was just overwhelming. It was a very good place to also buy some scarves and pashminas, for no more than 10 Euros.
Walking on Champs Elyseés was a very interesting experience, por a people watcher like myself you can find any kind of interesting subjects to observe and taste parisian style at it´s best. The metro was the best way to transport, it is very effective, can take you anywhere and it always felt very safe to me. Though walking was my favorite, even on a rainy day I can assure you there is no better way to experience Paris than to walk.
Paris was of course a beauty in itself, the city of light is also a one of a kind city because no matter how many tourists you can always feel and taste that Parisian atmosphere almost anywhere you go, I promissed myself I would come back.
