Monument Valley was probably one of the most picturesque places we've been to. We had a really good day, walking around one of the big rocks and going on a probably not worthwhile tour around the valley. It is possible to drive around 60% of the area yourselves. The rest is only for Navajo lead tour groups, and to be honest the best bits are all on the self-drive section anyway. Still, if you've got a spare $50...

We were staying just up the road from the valley in Kayenta in a fancy Hampton Inn Motel (which was also the cheapest in town). They did an excellent breakfast for us, consisting of scones, which of course the crazy American folk call biscuits, and burgers (which are obviously called sausages over here). We ate a bit much really.

And then in the evening we went out to the local museum on the Navajo Code Talkers. The museum didn't give much detail other than that the Code Talkers were Navajos recruited by the US during the Second World War to transmit messages in their unique language. It seemed from the museum that this all worked pretty well, although sadly the Navajo were not given any official thanks from the US government until the 1980s. Roobish. However, the best thing about the whole museum thing is that it was all in a Burger King.
