Heading through Germany
From Our Journey through Europe in Bad Schwalbach, Germany on Jul 10 '08
Gilly planned route with great precision however it soon became apparent that the maps were totally inadequate. We managed to get all the way to Brussels with no wrong turn then Lisa took over as navigator. We headed straight into the centre of Brussels because we missed the ring road. We almost got away with it but there had been an accident in the tunnel so we had to deal with major traffic jams. Eventually and by luck managed to see a sign for ring road and having driving in a big circle we were taken back to where we started.
Drove to Luxemburg in the pelting rain and somehow again managed to go around and around in circles trying to find the road which was incorrectly marked on the pretty useless map. We drove through the Belgium/French/Luxemburg borders as least 3 times in pursuit of finding the right road. Eventually we found the A8 to Saarbrucken. We stopped just North of Saarlouis as we saw a tent sign at a small town called Schwalbach on our lovely map. Finding the campsite was worse than a needle in a haystack and after spending several hours hunting we found a pizza place for food, beer and directions. Even with the directions the campsite proved impossibly out of the way. We were rescued by a lady with 2 small children who drove through a series of back lanes and housing estates to a sheltered wooded valley, the last place on earth you expect to find a camping site. The campsite is a bit special made up of a number of Hill Billy looking caravans with their own patios and marvellous gazebos, with hanging baskets, gardens gnomes and plastic tablecloths. It looks like tomorrow will be another day of being lost in Europe.
