The subtotal of what we know of Guatemala city we saw through the windows of a bus and taxi.

For the whole of our four or so months in Guatemala we had been treated to daily newspaper cover stories on the latest gang killings in the city (replete with computer generated homocide flow charts) and regular comments from other travellors on the dangers and annoyances of this sprawling city.

Thus, subject to the spectre of media hype and fear we were disinclined to venture further.

Our bus from Xela took us to the bus terminal. Our taxi took us to the hostel and the following morning the hostel transport delivered us to the airport.
