I can't help but meet people...its like they are drawn to me
From Walking the Pacific Coast in Carlsbad, United States on Jan 13 '08
I wake naturally at 7:40am. By 9am I have already bandaged my feet, gone to the grocery store, come back, made breakfast, and brushed my teeth. Last night, before I went to bed one of the guys in the hostel offered me a ride to Oceanside, California, as long as I was ready to go by 9am. At 9:30am I wake him up, because he is sleeping in the common room. He putters around. At 10:15am I ask him if he is almost ready to go. He says "not really". At 10:50am I ask him when he will be ready...he says he doesn't think he will go back to LA today...he is playing hooky from work for the third day in a row. I am mad. I have missed three trains north while waiting for him. In the end I convince him that he should at least drive me to the bus/train station. Once I get to the transit center I realize as I already knew, that despite the fact that it is 11:13am, the next Coaster train doesn't leave until 12:50pm. A guy at the platform informs me that I can take the #150 bus to the VA hospital and then the #101 down historical Route 101 to Oceanside. SWEET. I arrive in Oceanside at 1:30pm and I am SO HUNGRY. I find the Pier View Coffee Shop and I get a peach, pear, and apricot smoothie. The guy making my smoothie seems pretty laidback and cool. I know instantly that had we met under other circumstances we would be friends. My smoothie is incredible, but 20oz of liquid is not filling enough for me today so I continue walking down the street to a crepe shop. In the crepe shop I meet a 23 year old customer ahead of me in line. His name is Jeremy and as I walk into the shop I hear him telling the woman at the counter that he wants to just walk a great distance. I explain my trip to him. He wants in. Just like that. I say "why don't you hike with me today...we will see how things go...and then maybe we can do this together." We hike a mile down the beach together. Me on the sand. Him jumping rock to rock. I want a hiking partner, but he acts more like a monkey. I don't think it would be a good match...and I am always a bit suspicious of anyone other than myself who would just pick up on the fly and follow someone else's itinerary...doesn't he have a job he would need to give notice to? He turns around at 2:15pm in order to get back to babysitting. I continue on at a heightened pace, making it only 11.2 miles between 1:45pm and 6:15pm. I walk from Oceanside to Leucadia...with the last four miles being done after the sun has set. I know I must stop here (just 2.4 miles short of today's goal, because it is dark and too dangerous to be walking alone on the side of rt. 101...since the beach closes at sunset. It doesn't matter...I can not see any of the features that make this area so beautiful, and I also need to catch buses #101 and 30 to get back to the hostel tonight before the buses stop running for the evening. I make the #101 just fine, but I get off on the wrong stop and spend 20 minutes looking for a connection to #30. I arrive at the hostel at 9:20pm...meet a few new people and hang out with others. Today was an interesting day...I fell in love with a new California coastal town (Cardiff-by-the-Sea), sampled a new smoothie, got my full $5 worth of my bus day pass, realized I'm sad to be checking out of the hostel tomorrow morning and I did my first coastal hike in the pitch-black of night with my headlamp on.
he says "we could always just sleep in laundrymats"... I'm just not sure I want to stoop to his level of travel
