Caught a ferry from Wellington - 3 hours of choppy seas, not our favorite way to travel - to Picton on the South island. This area is the largest wine-producing area in NZ, famous for Sauvignon Blanc that knocks your socks off with crazy-fresh flavor. We stayed in a B&B called McCormick House, which was really nice - our innkeepers treated us to "wine and nibbles" and explained the intricacies of Marmite, a yeast-based spread which they eat for breakfast on toast every morning. An acquired taste.

Picton is a small town, and this is definitely off-season. One night we had dinner at an Irish pub - with an Indian-Polynesian chef! We had "butter chicken" (a close approximation of chicken tikka masala) and Guinness, of course! Surprisingly good.

After one rainy night in Auckland, we headed to Fiji.
