Rather continue down the east coast we backtracked through Hobart and headed south crossing the channel to Bruny Island on the car ferry. We camped at Adventure Bay. This is the only place that white wallabies are found. They make an unusual site. We did a bit of fishing with no luck but had a lovely meal of Flathead thanks to a group of group of friendly fishermen.

The neck connecting north and south islands had a spectacular beach lookout with 240 steps (A & I counted them). We returned to this spot one evening to watch the penguins come ashore to feed their young. At nightfall the cute babies impatiently screeched calling out for their mothers but were nearly as large as full grown penguins.

We visited the South Bruny Lighthouse, the second oldest in Australia and one of the only lighthouses built by convicts. We crossed the centre of the island in 4WD. We called in at the southern most pub in Australia at Alonnah, where A’s spilt orange juice was cleaned up by the 6 year old publican’s daughter.

Adventure Bay has a place in history as is was visited by famous explorers James Cook (landed in 1777), William Bligh (planted first apple tree in Tassie) and Mathew Flinders.
