Completed the Tongariro Crossing, which is widely considered the best one-day "tramp" (bush walk/hike) in New Zealand.

Covered the 18 kilometers in approximately 7 hours, battling the bitter cold, fierce winds, persistent rain, and loose, volcanic soil.

Along the way, saw pretty waterfalls, majestic moutain tops and many geothermal features.  The scenery was quite spectacular, despite the limited visibility provided by the day.

At least two people from my shuttle bus group turned back, at the first of two tough ascents.  One mystery person did not turn up at the designtated pick-up time, which did not seem to faze the bus driver as he departed precisely at 3:30.

This hike is the most spectacular you can do on the north island, and pretty dang sweet overall! It can be a little crowded during the summer seasons (Nov-Feb), and you should be sure to bring along layers for any weather. I was there in March and it was warm at the base, damn near freezing at the top. Beautiful hike!

Sounds challenging Rob! Good to know that your bus driver was a fan of Mussolini, wanting to make public transport run on time. Let the buggers freeze to death rather than the bus be 5 minutes late! cheers David & Dee
