Well I don't think anyone actually chooses to come to Rio Gallegos it's just where you have to go if you want to end up in El Calafate....and I can see why.

Once again we went with the no booking ahead policy as we thought no one would actually want to stay in a town in the middle of nowhere whose only claim to fame is they discovered oil here and have a museum devoted to oil.  Ended up staying at the second most expensive hotel we have stayed at for our whole trip.

Went for a walk to grab some dinner and were almost blown away by the strength of the freezing cold winds, not sure why they don't have wind turbines here as they could probably power all of South America....actually it's probably because some idiotic selfish landowners complained about them ruining their coastal views.

Nothing much else to be said about Rio Gallegos except if you can...fly direct from Bariloche to El Calafate.
