Today we drove 'the ring of Kerry' and it really was spectacular.. the drive is a loop around the Iveragh peninsular and the landscape is ever changing from coastal views to massive mountains, vast valleys, narrow roads and even narrower passes through mountains. We drove off the main road at the bottom of the peninsular to view the Skellig islands, these bizarre islands that look like giant shattered rocks sticking jagged out of the ocean. Even more amazing was that a monastery was set up on the island, I guess they'd heard about what happened at Glendalough and really wanted to make sure no one else tried to join them!

We drove off the main road again to visit Staigue Fort, an ancient stone ring fort that was high up in the hills with a view of the water, it was built in the stone age and was in remarkably good condition.
Chasing cows
All these crazy roads and crazy drivers didn't put us off and so we drove across the peninsular through the ballaghsheen pass which was this narrow winding road up through the valley to a tiny gap in the mountains only one car wide and with rock mountains on each side and lots of mountain sheep. It was spectacular and further along the road we got stuck behind a herd of cows, all part of driving in Ireland!
