We arrived in Shanghai after a long 17 hour train ride. Shanghai is a fairly modern city with high rises and five star hotels and many tourists everywhere. We have walked along the famous "Bund" which is the main promenade along the rivers edge. The view is amazing at night as every building is lit up in flashing neon lights - looks a bit like the Vegas strip.

We went up in the fourth tallest building in the world the Jin Mao tower and the views of the city were amazing from the top. We investigated the old town wondering down some back alleyways where alot of Shanghai people live. Alot of these areas share one communal bathroom - you can only imagine the smells around there. I think in general the smells around the country are very interesting to say the least. There is laundry hanging from every window - it is amazing that it gets clean with the pollution and dirty streets!

We tried our hand at bargaining again and are getting used to it. Mom even ventured out on her own to get a pashmina for only $5.
We are off to some rural parts of China so I don't know how much internet is available. Hopefully once we get to Hong Kong we can write again and post some pictures. The computers are too slow to upload pictures.
We are having a good time and has definitely been great to experience the Chinese culture. So over and out for us for now and we will update again when we can. We miss you all at home - lots of love January & Mom
