Goodbye Safari Hello white sand
From A journey of a thousand miles begins today!! in Mauritius on Dec 10 '06

Sadly, yet the perfect amount of time spent, we leave Kenya and arrive Mauritius. Steve was in charge of hotel accommodations for Mauritius so I eagerly was awaiting our next adventure!! Adventure begins by getting thru Immigration very late at night only to discover we have no place to stay because either Steve never emailed back or the mysterious hotel he emailed never emailed him back… Either way we are very tired, I’m hungry of course and we have nowhere to sleep. Perfect.
After trials and tribulations with a taxi driver we are taken to “Cocco Villa, Tourist Hotel” close to 11pm. I’ve seen some pretty bad hotel rooms, I’ve even stayed at some pretty bad hotels but this will take the prize over anyone’s stories. It was absolutely the nastiest place allowed to operate for money. There was a cockroach the size of some of the lizards we saw in Kenya on the sink, too many ants to count, so many that you killed them by the hundreds and traipsed their dead little bodies to every part of the room. The bed had a see thru sorry excuse for a sheet covering the springs that were literally showing through the mattress. It’s like this was the hotel they use in the movies to show a truly horrific hotel room. The ceiling fan was – I swear to god – a normal table fan strung up with a rope to hang from the ceiling and the toilet didn’t flush because it had no water in it. You had to take the orange plastic pitcher that sat on the back of the toilet and fill it up from the sink, dump it in the toilet and then flush. The only place to sit besides the gross bed basically on the floor was ONE plastic outdoor patio chair. All of this for $37 hard earned dollars. But it includes breakfast - I could hear my father saying. Speaking of breakfast and then I promise to get to Mauritius, was one ½ loaf of French bread, butter and tang made from tap water that made me sick promptly after drinking. Good news is they had a car for us to rent for only $90 bucks for 4 days so we got out of there as soon as possible.
