The main reason to be in Valencia in August is for La Tomatina. Valencia is the nearest airport and city.

In fact, Valencia is an attractive, old city. Most of the sites are within walking distance - the beach would be a challenge, but the tram is good. The modern Ciudad de las Artes y Ciencas  (City of Arts and Sciences) makes an interesting counterpoint to the traditional architecture of the medieval city. We spent most of our time there walking the streets, popping into churches to marvel at the products of the Catholic Church's exploitation of the peasants. Plenty of good ice-cream, coffee, horchata (a sort of nut milkshake - much better than it sounds) and beer. The open air bars were friendly and busy, although you need to be patient with the service.

We never did find a good paella, possibly a product of being in a group - we always went for the compromise.
