Four scoops please!
From Italy '06 in Castelfranco Veneto, Italy on Jul 11 '06
Realised when we had finished the last entry that it was not in fact straight to Rimini after our little fiasco in Padova so here are the missing bits!
From Padova, still laughing, we took the train complete with panniers to Castelfranco where we found a spot and just set up camp. The odd looks from people did continue but to be fair we were two foreign girls who were carrying weirdly shaped bags, alternating between swearing when we dropped our panniers on our feet and laughing when we remembered we had no bikes and who for no apparent reason were carrying cycling helmets!? The best was when we got to Castelfranco and decided that our situation warranted a whopper ice cream and so Jane went into to order our 4 scoop mumma cups. The man behind the counter then proceeded to get out 4 little tubs and Jane just stood and shook her head and pointed to the biggest cup they stocked and said "Due per favore". There really is nothing better in a such a situation than yoghurt ice cream!
Really don't know how she does it but Jane seems to be able to scam a lift of anyone
While we sat on the ground eating our monsters, several people tried to talk to us and find out what on earth we were doing there. Seeing as we had no idea where we were or really by this stage why we were there either, Jane was sent in search of directions of how to get to our hotel. She returned 10 minutes later with a beaming and announced that we were getting a lift to our hotel from a random Italian man who didn't speak any english but who had been persuaded into it by his wife! Really don't know how she does it but Jane seems to be able to scam a lift of anyone - probably because she has now perfect that damsel-in-distress look!
So we arrived at Nani Fero or whatever our place was called to hosts who were very grumpy and did not seem to appreciate our situation at all. Cue quickly rehearsed Italian phrase of "Someone stole our bikes" and more damsel-in-distress eyes from Jane and the manager seemed to warm to us (she even gave us chocolates the next morning when we left!)
Our stay there was short and kind of sweet. We were basically told what we were eating and yet again were the only females in the place. The next morning the absurdity of our situation seemed to have cooled the mood further of our host and her husband drove us back to the train station, the only part of Castelfranco we actually saw!
