Chapter 3: Marges Strange Work

Marge:

Meaningfull work

My work is very strange. I have a supervisor who avoids me, a director who talks too much, and a whole bunch of people doing nothing all day. I have to create a database the NGO's and a website from which you could access the database. The information is technically all there and already written in excel, but the problem is nobody here has a clue what they want this database to do nor where the actual excel document is. Also, they dont seem to have any standards as to how they input information, so I need to go through all 500 or so entries and correct every field. Yey! There are about 10 workers, out of which 2 are drivers, 3 are secretaries, 1 is the director, and the other people I'm still not quite sure what they do. The director walks in to work past 10am, and everyone leaves for lunch at least 30 minutes early, same thing for diner. Quite the motivating work environment! On top of it, they took my computer away about 10 days ago and Im still waiting for a new one. I come in to work, do nothing, talk to people, and leave. Sometimes I bring the laptop, but there isnt even internet access and I dont have the programs needed to do the database. It's now 11:14am, and I've just spent 3 hours rearranging photos on the laptop. I sure am glad to be helping the people of Burkina Faso! ;)

And for your viewing pleasure, I've attached a picture of the bathroom at my work. I'm not a big fan, and never use it (duh!).

Don't count on others to hit the ball- even though its the director's job. If there is nothing to do and everything is disorganized, iniatiate something on your own, others will follow. But also don't stress about the time schedule, they are more lax about than us in the west, whether for the better or for the worst.

now, that's advice even I could use...
