The next morning, they were up early for breakfast and then attempted to go back to sleep for a while. They left the hostel with everyone a little after one and after a short ride on a mini bus, they boarded a big bus for Pisco. Lori and Ian were nervous about their first trip on the bus as the last time the group had traveled on a bus; two people had had things stolen. In case something like that happened, they had packed back up of most things (copies of passports, medication, money, etc) so that if only one bag was taken they would be ok. It was nice traveling in numbers though and they managed to sit themselves in between the group, so they knew everyone around us. They started off the coach ride by playing “Cinderella Man”. They watched it, read their books and watched the scenery go by. They were both surprised how quickly the big city disappeared and was replaced by the dessert and shanty like towns. After “Cinderella Man” a Japanese Kung Fu movie was put on. They both tried to nap on and off for the rest of the journey. They arrived in Pisco after three and a half hours and then took a shuttle bus for another thirty minutes to their hotel, Zarcillo Paradise, in Paracas. A brick fence surrounded it. The guide told us later that night it was for security as well as keeping out the sand as many people in Lima had holiday houses in this area. Lori and Ian managed to get a room on the first (second) floor with a balcony overlooking the ocean. There was a nice cool breeze and they caught the last of the sunset. After checking in, the group took a five-minute walk into a nearby town for dinner. As they were at the coast, Lori and Ian shared fish in spicy tomato sauce (though neither of them thought it was spicy), rice, chips and calamari. They did a little reading before going to bed that night. They found out in the morning that Steven had had quiet an adventure when he went to go to sleep that night. Luckily the lights were on in his room when he pulled back the sheets to find a scorpion not far from where his head would be in the pillow. He was able to put a glass over it and the hotel staff later told him the scorpion was deadly. Needless to say, Lori and Ian now give their rooms a through check before setting in for the evening.

They were both surprised how quickly the big city disappeared and was replaced by the dessert and shanty like towns.

I'm sure you are disappointed that I have not caught up on these but it is my goal to read the rest of the journals before you get to our place! :-)

Yikes - scary scorpion! I would have freaked out if that was me. Just as well that guy saw it before going to sleep.
